STUDIES OF THE DRIVER AS A CONTROL ELEMENT

THE OBJECTIVES OF THIS RESEARCH PROGRAM WERE TO MODIFY AND UPDATE THE EXISTING UCLA DRIVING SIMULATOR, AND TO CONDUCT PRELIMINARY STUDIES FOR THE PURPOSE OF VALIDATING THE SIMULATION RESULTS BY COMPARISON WITH FIELD AND OTHER DATA FOR SIMILAR SUBJECTS AND TASKS. THE FIRST OBJECTIVE WAS ACCOMPLISHED BY INCORPORATING A SPECIALLY DEVELOPED CLOSED-CIRCUIT TV SYSTEM, TWO MODEL LANDSCAPES, AND APPROPRIATE INSTRUMENTATION. TO FULFILL THE SECOND OBJECTIVE THREE TYPES OF EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES WERE CONDUCTED. THEY WERE: OVERTAKING AND PASSING, RANDOM PATH FOLLOWING AND RANDOM WIND GUST REGULATION, AND CAR FOLLOWING. THE RESULTS OBTAINED IN THESE STUDIES ARE IN GOOD AGREEMENT WITH PRIOR RESEARCH. THE ANALYSES AND DATA DEMONSTRATE THAT THE UCLA DRIVING SIMULATOR PROVIDES A VALID REPRESENTATION OF REAL WORLD CONDITIONS AND IS AN EFFECTIVE TOOL FOR APPLIED RESEARCH IN THE AREA OF DRIVER CONTROL. /AUTHOR/
