STUDY OF THE INTERACTIONS OF FUEL VOLATILITY AND AUTOMOTIVE DESIGN AS THEY RELATE TO DRIVEABILITY

THE REPORT COVERS RESULTS OF DRIVEABILITY TESTING CONDUCTED AS ONE PART OF A TWO-PART PROGRAM TO STUDY THE INTERACTIONS OF FUEL VOLATILITY AND AUTOMOTIVE DESIGN ON DRIVEABILITY AND TOTAL EMISSIONS. THE PROGRAM SPECIFIED THAT DRIVEABILITY, EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS AND EXHAUST EMISSIONS BE EVALUATED IN 12 CARS ADJUSTED TO MANUFACTURERS' SPECIFICATIONS, AT FOUR AMBIENT TEMPERATURE LEVELS, WITH EIGHT SPECIALLY BLENDED FUELS OF DIFFERENT FRONT END AND/OR MID-RANGE VOLATILITY. THE TEMPERATURES SELECTED WERE 20F, 45F, 70F AND 95F. THE FUELS USED INCLUDED THREE VAPOR PRESSURE AND THREE-MID-BOILING RANGE TEMPERATURE LEVELS. THE REPORT COVERS ONLY THE DRIVEABILITY PHASE AND PRESENTS THE DATA ONLY IN SUMMARY FORM. /NTIS/
