AN AC ELECTRIC PROPULSION SYSTEM, CONSISTING OF A HIGH-SPEED GAS TURBINE AND DIRECT-COUPLED ALTERNATOR, STATIC FREQUENCY CONVERTERS, AND AC INDUCTION DRIVE MOTORS, DEMONSTRATED ITS FEASIBILITY IN AN OPERATIONAL SYSTEM. A FOUR-WHEEL EARTH-MOVING VEHICLE, PATTERNED AFTER THE U.S. ARMY UNIVERSAL ENGINEER TRACTOR, RUBBER TIRED, WAS USED AS THE TEST BED FOR THE ELECTRIC-DRIVE SYSTEM EVALUATION PROGRAM. SYSTEM OPERATION WAS EVALUATED IN STATIC DYNAMOMETER TESTING AND VEHICLE OPERATION OVER A TEST COURSE. A COMPUTERIZED PERFORMANCE PREDICTION PROGRAM WAS APPRAISED FOR ITS SUITABILITY AS A SYSTEM DESIGN TOOL BY COMPARING CALCULATED PLOTS WITH VEHICLE PERFORMANCE. /AUTHOR/
