Technological Innovations in Transportation for People with Disabilities Workshop Summary Report

The report summarizes a workshop held February 23, 2011 to examine technological innovations in accessible transportation and better understand the requirements of pedestrians and travelers with visual impairment or other disabilities. Part One focuses on the following presentations: Triggering a Virtuous Circle of Self-­‐‑Sustaining Accessibility and Transportation; Environmental Awareness for People with Visual Impairments—Gaps, Challenges, and Opportunities; Getting There if You are Blind: Synergistic Convergence of Technologies to Improve Wayfinding; Using Robotics and Artificial Intelligence to Improve Mobility and Navigation of People with Special Needs; Opportunities and Innovations in ITS and Mobile Technology for Accessible Transportation; Making Technology Universally Accessible for all Users, Including Those with Sensory and Cognitive Impairments. Part Two of the report summarizes the group breakout discussions.
