International search and rescue: an air perspective
Some perspective is provided on the scenario in which an aircraft crashes on the other side of an international border and an "alert phase" (ALERFA) is put in place in order to begin the process of searching for the missing aircraft and any possible survivors. This article aims to answer questions, such as What would happen in the event of a crash landing in the remote wilderness?; Who would search for those aboard?; and How would the responders know where to look? Coordination is the key to success, as discussed here.
