Rating the Environmental Impacts of Motor Vehicles: ACEEE’s Green Book® Methodology, 2011 edition

Every year, the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) publishes the ACEEE's Green Book® Online (http://www.greenercars.org/). The publication is a consumer-oriented guide which provides comprehensive environmental rating information for every new model in the U.S. light-duty vehicle market. The rating methodology is based on principles of life cycle assessment and environmental economics. Considerations include the impact of pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions, vehicle life cycle, upstream emissions, and manufacturing and disposal of vehicles. This publication, an update of the 2004 edition, describes the data issues, assumptions, and analysis methods used to develop the vehicle ratings for the ACEEE's Green Book®. It summarizes the application of the methodology to the 2011 model year (MY), highlights results for major class and technology types, and identifies needs for updating and refining the methodology.
