VEHICLE DESIGN ELEMENTS AFFECTING TRAFFIC SAFETY FRONT VERSUS REAR ENGINE AUTOMOBILES

A COMPARISON WAS MADE BETWEEN FRONT AND REAR ENGINE AUTOMOBILE FOR DOMESTIC AND FOREIGN VEHICLE GROUPS. ACCIDENT INVOLVEMENT RATES (AIR), INJURY SEVERITY DISTRIBUTIONS, AND ACCIDENT CHARACTERISTICS DISTRIBUTIONS WERE EXAMINED. IF ANY OF THE FINDINGS ARE RELATED SOLELY TO ENGINE LOCATION THEN THE RELATIONSHIPS SHOULD APPEAR FOR THE COMPARISONS BY ENGINE LOCATION OF FOREIGN VEHICLES, DOMESTIC VEHICLES, AND ALL VEHICLES COMBINED. THE FINDINGS WERE NOT CONSISTENT FOR ALL THE VEHICLE CLASSES IN ANY OF THE DATA EXAMINED. THEREFORE THE CONCLUSIONS ARE: (1) THE EVIDENCE DOES NOT SUPPORT ANY DIFFERENCE IN ACCIDENT INVOLVEMENT RATES BASED SOLELY ON ENGINE LOCATION. (2) NO DEFINITE CONCLUSIONS CAN BE STATED ABOUT THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ENGINE LOCATION AND SEVERITY OF INJURY OR VEHICLE HANDLING CHARACTERISTICS. /AUTHOR/
