MOTIONS AND LOADS PREDICTION OF CATAMARANS IN RANDOM SEAS
Motions and wave induced forces may cause considerable problems in the operability and structural design of catamarans. The lack of exact methods for determining the dynamic random loads on the cross-structure often leads to excessive weight of this important part of the catamaran. This in turn may lead to severe limitation on the catamaran payload carrying capacity. This paper discusses a method for determining the catamaran motions and the cross-structure loads induced by the random sea. A computerized procedure and program (CAT-5) is developed for this purpose. Comparisons with experiments and other analytical procedures are made at the different stages of the program development in order to examine the credibility of the results. In most cases, good agreement is obtained.
