THE DENVER AREA DRINKING-DRIVING SURVEY, 1971. FINAL REPORT

THIS REPORT SUMMARIZES THE RESULTS OF A HOUSEHOLD INTERVIEW WITH 504 PERSONS OF DRIVING AGE IN DENVER AND ITS SUBURBS (A 78.4% RESPONSE RATE). CONTENT AREAS OF THE SURVEY INCLUDE GENERAL KNOWLEDGE AND ATTITUDES ABOUT HIGHWAY SAFETY FACTORS; KNOWLEDGE OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE CONSUMPTION OF VARIOUS QUANTITIES OF ALCOHOL AND DRIVING IMPAIRMENT; WILLINGNESS TO SUPPORT AN EFFECTIVE ALCOHOL COUNTERMEASURES PROGRAM; AWARENESS AND IMPACT OF MEDIA MESSAGES ON DRINKING AND DRIVING; AWARENESS OF THE DENVER ALCOHOL COUNTERMEASURES PROGRAM; ATTITUDES TOWARD VARIOUS TYPES OF COUNTERMEASURE ACTIVITIES; ATTITUDES TOWARD ALCOHOLISM AND AWARENESS OF SOURCES OF ALCOHOL HELP; OWN BEHAVIOR IN REGARD TO DRINKING PATTERNS, DRIVING EXPERIENCE, AND DRIVING AFTER DRINKING; AND DEMOGRAPHIC AND BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON THE RESPONDENT (INCLUDING DRIVER'S LICENSE NUMBER). THE SURVEY WAS CARRIED OUT IN ORDER TO OBTAIN BASELINE INFORMATION USEFUL TO THE DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION OF THE PUBLIC INFORMATION COMPONENT OF THE THREE- YEAR DEMONSTRATION DENVER ALCOHOL SAFETY ACTION PROGRAM. SOME OF THE SALIENT FINDINGS INCLUDE: 90% OF THE RESPONDENTS SAID THEY HAD OR HAD HAD DRIVER'S LICENSES; 78% SAID THAT THEY DRINK; 43% SAID THAT THEY DO DRIVE AFTER DRINKING; AND 15% ADMITTED THAT THEY HAD DRIVEN AFTER DRINKING MORE THAN THEY SHOULD HAVE (SELF-DEFINED) IN THE PREVIOUS YEAR. /HSRI/
