A STATEMENT OF THE GENERAL STRUCTURAL DESIGN PROBLEM, SUITABLE FOR COMPUTER FORMULATION AND SOLUTION, IS PRESENTED, AND SOLUTION PROCEDURES ARE CONSIDERED. A DETAILED FORMULATION OF THE MINIMUM INITIAL COST DESIGN PROBLEM FOR SIMPLE SPAN PRESTRESSED CONCRETE BOX GIRDER BRIDGES IS PRESENTED, AND THE PROBLEM IS SOLVED BY A NONLINEAR PROGRAMMING PROCEDURE.
