AIR QUALITY MANUAL: VOL III. TRAFFIC INFORMATION REQUIREMENTS FOR ESTIMATES OF HIGHWAY IMPACT ON AIR QUALITY
HIGHWAY ENGINEERS MUST PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE ENHANCEMENT AND PROTECTION OF THE ENVIRONMENT. THEY WILL HAVE TO CONSIDER A VARIETY OF FACTORS IN THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF ANY HIGHWAY PROJECT AND COMPLETE A NUMBER OF STUDIES PRIOR TO WRITING AN IMPACT STATEMENT. ONE OF THESE STUDIES IS CONCERNED WITH THE GATHERING OF FIELD DATA, ANALYSIS OF SUCH DATA, AND WRITING AN AIR QUALITY REPORT. THIS MANUAL EXPLAINS THE REASONING BEHIND THE METHOD OF AIR QUALITY ANALYSIS WHICH INCLUDES A CONSIDERATION OF TRAFFIC INFORMATION. IT ALSO PROVIDES AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE TRAFFIC PARAMETERS AND THE WAY IN WHICH AIR QUALITY IS AFFECTED. /FHWA/
