SAFETY FEATURES IN HIGHWAY LIGHTING SYSTEM DESIGN
THE PAPER ANALYSES LIGHTING SYSTEM DESIGN WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THE GEOMETRIC FEATURES OF LIGHTING COLUMNS. IT IS STRESSED THAT LIGHTING COLUMNS MUST SATISFY TWO SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS: FUNCTIONAL, IN THAT THEY MUST WITHSTAND LOADS CAUSED BY WIND AND THE DEAD WEIGHT OF THE EQUIPMENT, AND SAFETY, IN THAT THEY SHOULD MEET STRUCTURAL STRENGTH LIMITATIONS. LIGHTING COLUMNS DESCRIBED INCLUDE ALUMINIUM POLES, COLUMNS HAVING FRANGIBLE JOINTS, LIGHTING COLUMNS MOUNTED ON CONCRETE CRASH BARRIERS, AND EXTRA HIGH LIGHTING COLUMNS.
