OBSTACLE VISIBILITY WITH EUROPEAN HALOGEN H4 AND AMERICAN SEALED BEAM HEADLIGHTS
IN A SERIES OF FIELD EXPERIMENTS NIGHT DRIVING VISIBILITY DISTANCES WERE MEASURED FOR EUROPEAN HALOGEN (H4) HEADLIGHTS AND AMERICAN SEALED BEAM (ASB) HEADLIGHTS FOR VARIOUS TRAFFIC SITUATIONS WITH AND WITHOUT ON-COMING VEHICLES. UNDER NORMAL ONDITIONS THE ASB HIGH BEAM WAS FOUND TO BE 15% INFERIOR AND THE ASB LOW BEAM 30% SUPERIOR. A SPECIAL GLARE EVALUATION CARRIED OUT BY PEDESTRIANS AND OPPOSING DRIVERS CLEARLY SHOWS HIGHER PERCEIVED GLARE FOR ASB. HOWEVER NO INDICATION OF REAL DISCOMFORT OR IRRITATION WAS OBTAINED. /TRRL/
