Surrendering the Keys: A Doctor Tries to Get an Impaired Elderly Patient to Stop Driving
In this article, a physician explains how she sought information and guidance about how to handle the issue of unsafe driving by elderly patients. It came to the doctor’s attention that one of her patients, a man in his 80s who had failed an on-road driving assessment, was probably still driving. The article covers the basic facts about older drivers, discusses resources that can provide guidance for health care providers, considers state requirements for reporting potentially unsafe drivers, and suggests some ways that other stakeholders can assist physicians who face this issue. The author concludes by arguing for an improved policy framework to help get dangerous older drivers off the road.
