Wave crashing
Following a devastating earthquake (the Tohoku Earthquake) and resulting tsunami in March of 2011, Japanese officials are taking a closer look at their susceptibility to this type of natural disaster, especially concerning the threat tsunamis pose to their bridge infrastructure. The Federal Highway Administration toured the area in July of 201, and some of the damaged bridges which they viewed are described. Some recommendations are made as to improvements for the future, and implications for California's Department of Transportation (Caltrans) are discussed.
