THE EFFECT OF LOW VISIBILITY ON THE PERFORMANCE OF VEHICLE OPERATORS

AN EXPERIMENTAL PROGRAM TO IDENTIFY THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN VISIBILITY CONDITIONS AND OPERATOR PERFORMANCE IS DISCUSSED. AVERAGE SPEED IN NEGOTIATING A CONTROLLED COURSE IS TAKEN AS THE MEASURE OF OPERATOR PERFORMANCE. THE METHOD TO MEASURE VISIBILITY IS DISCUSSED. IT IS SHOWN THAT DESPITE USE OF A CONTRIVED TEST COURSE AND ARTIFICIALLY REDUCED VISIBILITY, THE RESULTS APPEAR VALID. IT IS ALSO SHOWN THAT THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN VISIBILITY CONDITIONS AND AVERAGE SPEED CAN BE REPRESENTED WITH A SIMPLE, SECOND ORDER EQUATION. /AUTHOR/
