Parking management to improve safety and accessibility
This paper describes the methods adopted by Maribyrnong City Council in addressing issues of traffic and parking congestion, safety and accessibility for pedestrians and motorists alike within varied communities including universities, schools and hospital precincts and the Footscray Central Activities District (CAD). The paper demonstrates how we have integrated the two types of technology (hand-held computers and in-ground sensors), along with innovative traffic monitoring techniques to achieve efficiencies in managing parking supply in the CAD. It also demonstrates integrating safe travel planning strategies with parking enforcement and education strategies operating around primary school precincts. This included a holistic road safety audit of all school precincts and deploying teams drawn from local communities to engage with road users with a view to educating them about the key issues affecting safety, accessibility and amenity in these precincts. The key issues, challenges and outcomes from these strategies are discussed.
