Integrating a modern tramway into a World Heritage Site

Incorporating a new tram system into any existing city is no easy task. As well as meeting operational expectations, the Edinburgh Tram design team had to overcome the complex and interrelated challenges that accompany building new infrastructure in a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This meant a strong focus on aesthetics and urban design needs with the constraint of the technical and geometric requirements. This paper provides an overview of the design development of one site within Edinburgh's World Heritage Site - St. Andrew Square — a highly important and visible space contained within the heart of the city centre 'Old Town'. It highlights how the demands and challenges of placing modern infrastructure in a World Heritage Site through balancing the technical requirements and geometric constraints with the demands of place making. The paper also examines how the design team worked with the City of Edinburgh Council and heritage organisations to create a design that complied with urban planning requirements, integrated with the wider transportation network, and minimised impacts to the World Heritage Site.
