SIMULATION - ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES
THE APPLICATION, ADVANTAGES, AND DISADVANTAGES OF MATHEMATICAL SIMULATION TECHNIQUES (WHICH FALL INTO FOUR PRIMARY CATEGORIES: VEHICLE CRASH DYNAMICS; BIOMECHANICS; RESTRAINT SYSTEMS; AND VEHICLE HANDLING) ARE PRESENTED. MANY LEVELS OF SIMULATION HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED FOR STUDYING VEHICLE RESPONSE AND DEFORMATION IN CRASH ENVIRONMENTS. THERE LEVELS BEGIN AT A BASIC CONCEPT AND EXTEND THROUGH A MULTIDEGREE OF FREEDOM NON-LINEAR FINITE ELEMENT IDEALIZATION. PRESENT AND PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT EFFORTS ARE DISCUSSED. IN THE BIOMECHANICS AREA, ANALYTICAL SIMULATION TECHNIQUES ARE BEING APPLIED AT TWO LEVELS OF DETAIL, I.E., GROSS MOTION SIMULATION AND DETAILED STRUCTURAL MODELING. IN THE OCCUPANT RESTRAINT CATEGORY, SIMPLE MODELS HAVE BEEN USED FOR STUDYING SPECIFIC ASPECTS OF HUMAN KINEMATICS AND MORE COMPLEX MODELS UTILIZING SEVERAL MASSES HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED FOR SIMULATING BODY MOTIONS. MATHEMATICAL SIMULATIONS CAN BE A VALUABLE AID IN THE HARDWARE DEVELOPMENT OF AIR CUSHION RESTRAINT SYSTEMS. DISADVANTAGES OF RESTRAINT SYSTEM MODELS ARE ENUMERATED. A STATE-OF-THE-ART COMPUTER MODEL OF A PASSENGER CAR OPERATING IN A WIDE RANGE OF CONDITIONS IS DESCRIBED AND THE ADVANTAGES OF A GOOD VEHICLE HANDLING SIMULATION ARE DISCUSSED. THE INTENTION IS EXPRESSED OF REFINING AND EXPANDING THE HYBRID VEHICLE HANDLING PROGRAM. THE VALIDATION OF NEW DEVELOPMENTS AGAINST TEST DATA AND THE CONFIRMATION OF THE ACCURACY OF MODELS, WILL MAKE POSSIBLE THE EVALUATION OF SAFETY FACTORS OF NEW CARS BEFORE THEY LEAVE THE DRAWING BOARD.
