1993 Intermodal Index
The findings of the fourth annual Intermodal Index, a market research initiative sponsored by the Intermodal Association of North America (IANA) and The National Industrial Transportation League (NITL), are presented in this report. This index can be used by shippers as a benchmark and evaluation tool. Transportation service providers can use it as a guide for service enhancement. Two parallel surveys were used for this index from 500 United States based transportation managers and 75 plant/distribution center managers. Key findings are summarized, relating to the following issues: decision-making criteria for shippers; intermodal performance; intermodal market share; key factors driving increased intermodal use; intermodal equipment shortages; and inventory carrying costs.
