TWO CONCEPTS FOR AUTOMATIC HEADWAY CONTROL SYSTEMS
The headway control for a high speed transportation system where vehicles are moving along a guideway is studied. The guideway is divided into blocks and the block signal is used for vehicles' speed control. The instability of the measured block signal is investigated. A method is devised to extract the actual block signal. The scheme can be realized either by hardware or software. To improve the reliability of the sensing system, the concept of redundancy is employed. A logic scheme is developed which will detect the occurrence of a failure in the sensing system, identify the faulty sensor, and rearrange the solution program. A hardware and a software implementation of the method are proposed.
