Editor's introduction: we never know the worth of water till the well is dry
This paper serves as an introduction to 19 other papers written by experts in the field of maritime economics. A background of changes in the industry is first given, in terms of globalization; the growing role of containerized transport, industrialization and growing geographic coverage of shipping companies; the adoption of hub-and-spoke operations as a result of larger containerships; global proliferation of devolved port governance systems with greater private sector participation; increasing importance of safety, security and the environment; and the shift from Europe towards Asia. Next the various maritime economic-related topics that are covered in the succeeding 19 chapters are summarized and linked together.
