RESULTS OF THE SANTA MONICA PROTOTYPE PROGRAM TO ASSIST AND RE-EDUCATE DRINKING DRIVERS
A PROTOTYPE PROGRAM FOR ASSISTING AND RE-TRAINING CONVICTED DRINKING DRIVERS WAS CONDUCTED. THIS PROGRAM INCLUDED 60 COURT-ASSIGNED SUBJECTS WHO WERE CONVICTED OF DRINKING-DRIVING CHARGES AT THE SANTA MONICA MUNICIPAL COURT IN CALIFORNIA. THESE PARTICIPANTS WERE SUBJECTED TO A 12-WEEK DRIVER ASSISTANCE AND RE-TRAINING PROGRAM INCLUDED THE FOLLOWING BASIC COUNTERMEASURES: INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING, CLASS RETRAINING SESSIONS, GROUP THERAPY, AND CRISIS INTERVENTION IN THE FORM OF HOT LINE DRIVER ASSISTANCE SERVICES. PROGRAM RESULTS LED TO THE FOLLOWING TENTATIVE GENERALIZATIONS: (1) INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING AND CLASS RE-TRAINING WERE SUCCESSFUL IN MEETING PROGRAM OBJECTIVES; (2) STANDARDIZED INITIAL AND EXIT INTERVIEWS APPEARED TO BE THE MOST COST-EFFECTIVE FORMS OF COUNSELING; (3) GROUP THERAPY RESULTS WERE GENERALLY FAVORABLE BUT PROBLEMATIC IN SOME ASPECTS; (4) CLASS RE-TRAINING WAS UNIVERSALLY APPROVED BY THE PARTICIPANTS; AND (5) CRISIS INTERVENTION TECHNIQUES WERE NOT FOUND TO BE COST-EFFECTIVE.
