REDUCING HIGHWAY DEATHS AND INJURIES
THE REMEDIAL TRAFFIC SAFETY PROGRAMS OF THE FEDERAL AND STATE GOVERNMENTS, THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY, AND PRIVATE AGENCIES ARE DISCUSSED. DESPITE THESE EFFORTS, ANY GAINS ARE DWARFED BY INCREASED AUTO OWNERSHIP AND INCREASED TRAVEL. IT IS FELT THAT A LONG-TERM SOLUTION MAY REQUIRE REARRANGEMENT OF COMMUNITY PATTERNS OF LIVING TO PROVIDE LESS RELIANCE ON USE OF THE AUTOMOBILE.
