DESIGN OF PROPELLER/SHAFT SYSTEM WITH REFERENCE TO VIBRATION AND STRENGTH

This paper presents briefly sub-loops induced in an interactive design scheme employed for minimization of vibratory output from single and twin-screw propellers and main shaft systems while maintaining their required strength properties. Regression equations are used to produce series ship lines for matching to individual requirements, and the paper illustrates how the model wake field may be used as a basis for selecting engine/shaft systems and for control of propeller strength and cavitation particulars. Surface forces in the propeller aperture are shown to form an important loop in the system. All systems are based on the use of large computers and the total time for projection is included in the presentation.
