Smooth Operator: Advanced Traffic Management Schemes, as Deployed in the Seattle Area

The Washington State Department of Transportation has launched Smarter Highways, an advanced traffic management system, on Interstate 5 and several other highways in the Seattle area. Lane control and variable speed limits are used to address traffic congestion, and drivers are notified of incidents upstream which could have an impact on their travel. Cost is significant, with investment in additional gantries, signs, sensors, communications hardware, and software; funding came from congestion mitigation funds from a nearby tunnel project and FHWA. Performance data is being gathered for evaluating the changes, and further enhancements, such as hard shoulder running, are being considered.
