GEARED PROPULSION SYSTEMS USING ENGINES OF 750-3750 KW (1000-5000 HP)

The authors discuss single and multiple arrangements of diesel engines ranging from heavy duty designs for operation at 600 rev/min to designs for low specific weight for operation at over 1500 rev/min which can offer propulsion system powers from below 1000 hp to 15,000 to 20,000 hp with interim power alternatives. Overall costs of three cylinder sizes are compared and specific weight and volume data for chosen shaft horsepowers in two different types of duty show that each cylinder size has its own specific area of application dictated by the economic case. The response to transient load change has worsened with increased pressure charging and complex drive systems with coupled engines and power take-offs have created difficulties in the avoidance of unwanted resonances in the operating range. It is necessary to analyse each system in the design stage to ensure that the required performance is achieved during manoevering. These technical issues associated with the use of geared medium speed engines for propulsion are covered in detail and the paper describes analytical methods that enable the designer to choose from available variables and so devise a stable system.
