BASIC RESEARCH IN CRASHWORTHINESS II. TESTING AND EVALUATION COLLAPSING FORWARD STRUCTURE MODIFICATION CONCEPT IN CAR-TO- CAR FRONTAL COLLISIONS
IN AN ATTEMPT TO ENHANCE THE COLLISION RESPONSE OF VEHICLES UNDERGOING CAR-TO-CAR FRONTAL IMPACTS, REGIONS OF THE FRAME STRUCTURE IN FRONT OF THE ENGINE AND FIRE WALL WERE MODIFIED ON A TYPICAL, FULL SIZE FRONT ENGINE AUTOMOBILE (1968 FORD SEDAN). A SERIES OF FOUR MODIFIED VEHICLES WERE DEVELOPED AND TESTED AT THE DESIGN SPEED. ONE VEHICLE WAS TESTED IN A HEAD-ON, CENTRAL IMPACT COLLISION WITH A STANDARD OR UNMODIFIED (BASE LINE) CAR. ANOTHER COLLIDED WITH AN UNMODIFIED VEHICLE IN A HEAD-ON, 2 FT. OFF- CENTER TEST, WHILE THE REMAINING TWO VEHICLES WERE IMPACTED INTO EACH OTHER IN A HEAD-ON, 2 FT. OFF-CENTER TEST. SIMILAR TESTS WERE ALSO PERFORMED WITH STANDARD VEHICLES. THE COLLISION RESPONSES EXAMINED INCLUDED THE LONGITUDINAL (IMPACT DIRECTION) PASSENGER COMPARTMENT DECELERATIONS, THE FRONT END VEHICLE CRUSH DISTANCE AND THE AMOUNT OF PENETRATION (FIRE WALL INTRUSION) INTO THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. /AUTHOR/
