MEDIUM SPEED SEMT-PIELSTICK DIESEL ENGINES FOR MARINE PROPULSION-APPLICATIONS AND RESULTS IN SERVICE
This paper does not dwell upon the known advantages of medium speed engines such as volume and weight reduction of the propulsion unit, matching of propeller speed with its maximum efficiency, increased safety from several independent engines, uniformity of cylinders for different needs and so on, as such matters have been the object of major and minor developments during recent years. Rather does it deal with some practical supplementary elements proper to medium speed propulsion units as, for example, the common case of the propulsion installation consisting of two engines coupled to one propeller with a clutch separating each engine from the reduction gear box. Such clutches were some years ago, either hydraulic or electro-magnetic; now they are increasingly replaced by friction type clutches, particularly for variable pitch propellers.
