OAKLAND COUNTY'S IN-DEPTH COLLISION-INVESTIGATION PROGRAM

IN JULY 1971, HSRI BEGAN AN EXPANDED COLLISION- INVESTIGATION PROGRAM IN OAKLAND COUNTY, MICHIGAN, TO OBTAIN INJURY-CAUSATION DATA FOR RECENT-MODEL CARS INVOLVED IN COLLISIONS. ABOUT 400 COLLISIONS A YEAR ARE BEING INVESTIGATED. THIS ARTICLE REVIEWS THE RATIONALE AND PROCEDURES INVOLVED IN SETTNG UP AND OPERATING THE FIRST YEAR OF THE PROGRAM, AND SOME OF THE RESULTS. IN ADDITION TO THE INJURY-CAUSATION ANALYSES, DATA FROM THIS CONTINUING PROGRAM WILL BE USED IN ANALYSES OF RESTRAINT-SYSTEM USAGE AND EFFECTIVENESS; ROOF STRUCTURE PERFORMANCE IN ROLLOVER ACCIDENTS; ENERGY-ABSORBING STEERING COLUMN PERFORMANCE; AND FRONTAL DAMAGE. /HSRI/
