DEVELOPMENT OF A VEHICLE MOUNTED CRASH RECORDED

A PROGRAM TO DESIGN, CONSTRUCT, AND TEST A SIMPLE AND COMPACT CRASH RECORDER FOR MEASURING SHOCK PHENOMENA IN MOTOR VEHICLE CRASHES IS DESCRIBED. THE CONCEPTUAL DESIGN GUIDELINES CALLED FOR A SIMPLE, SELF- CONTAINED RECORDING ACCELEROMETER CONSISTING OF A SPRING/MASS PENDULUM, A COLLIMATED RADIOACTIVE LIGHT SOURCE AS PART OF THE INERTIAL MASS, AND PHOTOGRAPHIC FILM AS THE RECORDING MEDIUM. THE FINAL DESIGN, WHICH INCORPORATED A PULSED LIGHT-EMITTING DIODE AND OPTICAL LEVER INSTEAD OF A RADIOACTIVE LIGHT SOURCE, DEMONSTRATED THE FEASIBILITY OF MEETING THE PERFORMANCE GOALS. LABORATORY AND BARRIER CRASH TESTS OF THE PROTOTYPE MODEL SHOW THE SYSTEM IS CAPABLE OF PROVIDING TIME-RESOLVED ACCELERATION DATA IN ANY DIRECTION ON A SINGLE PLANE. THE PROTOTYPE MODEL HAS A RANGE OF 3 TO 70 G, A NATURAL FREQUENCY OF 55 HZ, MULTI-ACCIDENT CAPABILITY, AND HIGH RELIABILITY. /AUTHOR/
