Spatial Planning and Transport in Mid West Ireland – Developing a Deliverable Strategy
This paper describes how the Mid-West Ireland situation demonstrates how the land use strategy and transport planning interact, even if not in statutory harmony. The paper shows how land use and transport planning need to be developed jointly in order to achieve any form of sustainable approach. Linking the statutory planning process with an understanding of urban and rural transport is vital to developing a strategy that reduces the need to travel, supports a shift from car dependency and creates economic growth. In the Mid-West Ireland, many of the public transport improvements that are essential to improve accessibility can be achieved through changes to the bus and coach network to reflect the land use strategy.
