CHARACTERISTICS OF CONCRETE STRUCTURES RELEVANT TO OFF-SHORE USES AND CONDITIONS
Structural concrete can offer fail-safe behaviour, high energy absorption, high fatigue strength and high resistance to seawater corrosion. In fact unique security against such corrosion can be provided at some extra cost. Although concrete structures are normally heavier than those of steel, it is claimed that structures of comparable weight can be built in concrete where the function requires it, at an attractive cost. This paper examines these matters covering such facets as the historical background, structural behaviour--fail safe, impact and fatigue; practicalities--automatic testing, assembly of separate elements and corrosion resistance; structural weight and costs.
