Regional airports' environmental management: key messages from the evaluation of ten European airports

The challenge for the airport industry now, as city airports have already expanded to meet existing and future demand, is to focus on the development of secondary and regional airports to accommodate further air transport demand. As a result, investors are attracted to regional airports because of the new business opportunities they provide. The contribution to environment disturbance by airports in local and global scale is significant, even though they bring significant benefits to local and national economy. Because of this growing environmental sensitivity, a crucial element of aviation industry development is airport environmental management. Airports are subjected to the control of community and non-governmental organisations' (NGO) complaints on one hand, and they must meet the regional and national targets set by civil aviation and local authorities on the other hand. The need to identify the environmental issues is essential, especially for regional airports, because their business development is directly linked to disturbance in the environment and to the local/national communities' level of tolerance. There is little research related to measuring the efficiency and performance of environmental management systems, even though the environmental management process is crucial to regional airport development. In spite of this, not many regional airports, especially those that serve fewer than 5 million passengers, annually, have set specific targets for their environmental performance. The results of the evaluation of 10 European regional airports' environmental plans are presented in this paper. Conventional wisdom is to provide some key messages, in order to improve the planning and decision process in airport environment management, as well as highlight some recommendations for further research in the future. The results show that essential elements strongly related to regional airports' environmental efficiency are the national legislation framework and residents' ethics, along with the airport business factions (such as the management scheme, the location topology and the airport size).
