Nevado DOT and Partners Cut Project Delivery Time in Half

This article describes a project conducted by the Nevada Department of Transportation (DOT) that was contracted out as a design/build paving project. The winning bidder, North Corridor Constructors (NCC), recently completed the five-year freeway project on Interstate-15, just north of Las Vegas, months ahead of schedule. The $242 million project included 15 new bridges, excavations for roadway realignment, lane additions, a new median, desert landscaping, and extensive utility work. The author discusses the development of the project concepts, the use of long-life asphalt pavement, the performance requirements in mix design and quality assurance, asphalt preparation strategies, the existing pavement structure, the use of a saturated paving fabric, and the role of good planning and collaboration with state and city officials. The author concludes with a brief discussion of the three reasons why the project was able to be completed in less time than anticipated: dividing construction into four sections; using pre-cast girders for 9 of the 15 bridges; and utilizing innovative traffic control.
