Car versus tree: Accident or suicide attempt
A 92 year old man is admitted to the hospital after crashing headlong into a tree. He wasn't wearing a seatbelt and there wasn't any apparent reason for the crash. Family members mentioned he suffered from chronic pain, which made the emergency room nurse question if it was an accident or a suicide attempt. Emergency rooms increasingly must be able to assess the potential suicide risk of geriatric patients by paying attention to indicators, such as behavior, chronic pain, and signs of depression.
