REVIEW OF SEWAGE SYSTEM FOR SHIPS
This paper is mainly concerned with the prevention of pollution by ship's sewage. The authors deal briefly with the standards and regulations being considered or imposed by various authorities and the effect these will have on ship's sewage systems. A review of the development of ship's plant is followed by a description of some typical and currently available plants, namely, retention tanks with no treatment; retention tanks with maceration and chlorination; activated sludge and extended aeration treatment plants and chemical treatment recirculation systems. The paper also attmepts to show some advantages and disavantages of the various systems without favouring a particular type and manufacturer, and concludes by showing that the final choice of plant rests with the shipowner. An appendix details some main terms relevant to the subject.
