Environmentally Friendly Elimination of Moss from Open-Graded Asphalt Pavement

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has discovered moss growing on highways in heavily forested areas in northern coastal California (District 1). In District 1, Caltrans has used in some instances an open-graded asphalt pavement mix with few fines to provide a more porous surface that quickly drains surface water to reduce hydroplaning. The roadway segments with moss growth adjacent to the traveled way have passed skid tests, which indicate an acceptable coefficient of friction. This Preliminary Investigation sought to identify cost effective, environmentally sensitive best practices but found no published research on moss control for open-graded pavements. It reports anecdotal evidence as well as treatment options which may be applicable to such pavements.
