Practices and Guidelines for Temporary Transverse HMA Tapers

During hot mix asphalt (HMA) construction and rehabilitation, partially completed pavements are often opened to traffic between construction periods. This results in transverse dropoffs at the transition between pavements of different elevations. The California Department of Transportation follows the common practice of constructing transverse tapers (or wedges) of hot mix asphalt (HMA) between the different pavement levels. Practices vary greatly nationwide for temporary transverse HMA tapers on such factors as taper slope; HMA mix design; and requirements based on dropoff height and speed limit. Tapers that are too abrupt for conditions may result in a rough ride for motorists. This Preliminary Investigation found a lack of research on temporary tranverse HMA tapers. There is little documented evidence for the wide spectrum of practices pursued by different states.
