TRANSFER EFFECTIVENESS OF SIMULATION IN A DRIVER EDUCATION PROGRAM

SUBSTITUTION OF A CERTAIN NUMBER OF HOURS OF SIMULATOR TRAINING FOR AN HOUR OF ON-THE-ROAD TRAINING HAS MADE IT POSSIBLE FOR A SINGLE INSTRUCTOR TO TEACH AS MANY AS 15 STUDENTS SIMULTANEOUSLY. STILL GREATER ECONOMY CAN BE REALIZED IF THE NUMBER OF SIMULATOR HOURS CAN BE REDUCED WITHOUT DEGRADING THE QUALITY OF TRANSFER TO THE OPERATIONAL SITUATION. THE PRESENT STUDY EVALUATED THE DIFFERENTIAL EFFECTS OF VARIOUS AMOUNTS OF FILM AND SIMULATOR INSTRUCTION ON DRIVING KNOWLEDGE AND ROAD PERFORMANCE. INSTEAD OF INVESTIGATING THE EFFECT OF VARIOUS TREATMENTS ON INDIVIDUAL SCORES, IT ADDRESSED THE QUESTION OF WHAT THOSE SCORES HAD IN COMMON AND WHAT EFFECT THE INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS HAD ON THE COMMON FACTORS INHERENT IN ROAD PERFORMANCE. IT ALSO ATTEMPTED TO ASSESS THE TRANSFER EFFECTIVENESS OF SIMULATORS AND FILMS AND TO DETERMINE WHETHER THE SIMULATOR PERFORMANCES OF LICENSED DRIVERS AND NEW STUDENTS DIFFER. THE CONCLUSIONS ARE DISCUSSED WITH REFERENCE TO THE INHERENT DRAWBACKS OF SIMULATORS.
