GIS-Based Coding Approach and Algorithm for Urban Road Elements
The primary objective of this paper is to study and develop a geographic information system (GIS)-based coding approach and system which will provide the foundation and support for the realization of intelligent management of complicated traffic networks. The authors choose the links and nodes in an urban network as the entity elements, and design GIS-based coding forms, following the rules of uniqueness, expandability, flexibility, and stability. Then, the authors institute the appropriate coding regulations, thereby defining the mark symbols of different digits in the codes. The authors focus on the detailed design and program implementation of the calculating algorithm of the position coordinates and the spatial location coding algorithm for road elements. Last, the authors develop the Beijing Automatic Road Coding System using Visual Basic and Map Objects, which completes the coding for all the nodes and links in the Beijing GIS network.
