GEARED DIESELS. SOME ECONOMIC FACTORS
Several factors are examined, assessed and rates as to maximum efficiency obtainable in using medium speed diesel/ gearbox combinations to the ultimate effect. When steam and diesel plants were analyzed on Discounted Cash Flow basis for different fuels, the savings were worthwhile with the medium speed diesel burning heavy or, more correctly, intermediate blend fuel. The analysis of the maximum number of services that can be driven from the gearbox or power center, especially cargo pumps in large tankers and deck machinery in bulk carriers, also shows the medium speed diesel/gearbox combination to give savings.
