DESIGN HIGHER POWERED STEAM TURBINES
The increased capacity and speed of container vessels brings a continuing demand for main propulsion units of increased power. To meet this trend two sets of cross-compound turbines and gearing, each designed for a maximum power of 44,000 shp at a propeller shaft speed of 140 rev/min, were put into service before November 1972. They are the first of eight sets being manufactured for four twin screw, 35,000 tdw container vessels. The turbines are axial plane 2H61M--AE standard range designs and this paper describes and illustrates the salient design features of the frame with particular reference to developments in turbovisory equipment that allows for safe, reliable remote control and applications to unmanned engine rooms. Essential information on rotating machinery subjected to normal procedures were provided by shipboard trials, a turbine cylinder being completely instrumented for tests at sea.
