TRAFFIC CONTROL & ROADWAY ELEMENTS - THEIR RELATIONSHIP TO HIGHWAY SAFETY/REVISED. CHAPTER 10 ONE-WAY STREETS AND PARKING
IN THE FIRST PART, STUDIES ARE DISCUSSED WHICH SHOW THAT MAKING STREETS ONE-WAY REDUCES THE ACCIDENT RATE AND THE ACCIDENT SEVERITY RATE. PROPER SIGNS MUST BE AMPLY PROVIDED OR THE UNFAMILIAR MOTORIST MAY BE INVOLVED IN ACCIDENTS CAUSED BY TURNING INTO OR FROM THE WRONG LANE. IN THE SECOND PART, PARKING IS DISCUSSED AS A CAUSAL FACTOR IN URBAN ACCIDENTS. PARKING ACCIDENTS DECREASE WITH INCREASE OF STREET WIDTH. MORE ACCIDENTS OCCUR WHERE PARKING IS NOT CONTROLLED THAN WHERE IT IS PROHIBITED OR LIMITED, AND WHERE PARKING IS AT AN ANGLE RATHER THAN PARALLEL. FURTHER RESEARCH IS SUGGESTED ON BOTH TOPICS.
