THE USE OF ANALYTICAL METHODS IN THE DESIGN OF MARINE PROPULSION GEARING

In order to ensure the high degree of reliability essential for marine propulsion gearing the designer requires a great deal of technical and practical application information, but there is seldom the opportunity to carry out full scale testing to prove performance and assess reliability. Comparison with previous designs can assist the designer, but it is invariably necessary, in order to obtain information at the design stage, to make recourse to analytical methods of assessment with the use of specially prepared computer programs. The paper describes methods used to simulate ship performance to enable maximum applied loads to be determined and discusses methods of stress and vibration analysis for gear case structure and shafting. Because sufficient operating experience of any one propulsion system on which to assess reliability is rarely based on a normal distribution of errors with tolerance bands for materials and dimensions.
