STUDY OF THE INHIBITING PROPERTY OF CHROMATES BY POTENTIOSTATIC AND GALVANOSTATIC TECHNIQUES. DETERMINATION OF PROTECTION LEVELS
THERE ARE SEVERAL WAYS OF REDUCING THE CORROSION RATE OF METALS: ONE OF THEM IS TO MODIFY THE CONDITIONS OF THE MEDIUM. THIS MAY BE DONE BY ADDING SUBSTANCES WHICH RETARD THE CORROSION PROCESS. THESE SUBSTANCES ARE CALLED INHIBITORS. CHROMATES ARE WIDELY USED IN COOLING SYSTEMS, STEAM BOILERS, ETC. USING POLARIZATION CURVES OBTAINED WITH POTENTIOSTATIC METHODS AND RAPID GALVANOSTATIC TESTS, THE PROTECTION LEVELS FOR THE CHROMATE-PH- AND CHROMATE-PH-CHLORIDE SYSTEMS WERE DETERMINED. CHROMATE CRITICAL CONCENTRATIONS WERE ESTABLISHED, THUS ENSURING THE PROTECTION OF THE SYSTEM AS A FUNCTION OF PH AND PH-CHLORIDE RESPECTIVELY. THE METAL USED IN THE EXPERIMENTS WAS IRON. /TRRL/
