QUALITY CONTROL OF SOILS IN BANKING USING THE RADIO ISOTOPE APPARATUS - PART 2
IN-SITU MEASUREMENTS OF THE DENSITY AND MOISTURE-CONTENT OF SOILS WITH A NUCLEAR DENSITY PROBE AND A NEUTRON MOISTURE PROBE NEED FAR LESS TIME THAN MEASUREMENTS BY THE DRY SAND METHOD. THERE IS A TENDENCY TO USE THESE RADIOISOTOPE APPARATUS WIDELY FOR THE QUALITY CONTROL OF SOIL EMBANKMENTS, DATA OBTAINED WITH THE R.I. APPARATUS SHOW WIDE VARIATIONS DUE TO THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE R.I. APPARATUS. IT IS THEREFORE IMPORTANT TO KNOW HOW TO TREAT THE DATA STATISTICALLY. NUMEROUS DATA WERE OBTAINED FROM FIELD TESTS AND IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT: (1) VARIATIONS IN MEASUREMENTS OF THE DENSITY AND MOISTURE-CONTENT OF SOILS WITH THE R.I. APPARATUS NEED NOT BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT; (2) STATISTICAL SAMPLING METHODS SUCH AS THE "OPERATING CHARACTERISTIC CURVE" CAN BE EFFECTIVELY USED FOR THE PURPOSE OF "QUALITY CONTROL OF SOILS".
