Modelling untidiness of mixed traffic using fuzzy logic
When traffic flow is homogenous and tidy, the placement of vehicles on a multilane highway, which indicates the usage of the lane, follows a normal distribution. However, when traffic is of a mixed type and follows an untidy flow, mathematical distributions are unable to define placement of vehicles on four-lane divided roads with or without paved shoulders. The definition of untidiness here is a measure which indicates the percentage of traffic in a stream which does not follow its lane. Fuzzy rules are developed for untidiness for four categories of vehicles, showing that untidiness of heavy vehicles, autos and cars are least affected by traffic volume, for paved shoulders. As for unpaved shoulder sections, untidiness of autos increases with its own volume on the road up to a certain level, and then it is almost unaffected. No observations were made of a definite trend of untidiness of auto volume of two-wheelers. The untidiness for cars is high for low volume of autos, and then it reduces. Untidiness of cars and heavy vehicles is not affected by volume of two-wheelers.
