ONTARIO FORBIDS USE OF STUDDED TIRES ON GROUNDS OF DANGER, PAVEMENT DAMAGE
AFETER 30 APRIL 1971 ONTARIO PROVINCE (CANADA) WILL BAN STUDDED TIRES. A SURVEY SHOWED THAT 60% OF VEHICLES WOULD BE USING STUDDED TIRES BY THE WINTER OF 1971-72 AT A COST OF $127,000,000 IN HIGHWAY AND STREET DAMAGE OVER THE NEXT 10 YEARS IN SOUTHERN ONTARIO ALONE. THE ONLY CONDITION UNDER WHICH THE TIRES ENHANCE SAFETY---ICE---AVERAGES ONLY 1.1% OF TOTAL DAY-MILES IN THE PROVINCE. MAXIMUM BENEFIT OCCURS WITH GLARE ICE, WITH THE TEMPERATURE AROUND 32F, AND THE ADVANTAGE DECLINES WITH A RISE OR DROP IN THE MERCURY. ANTICIPATED DAMAGE CAN BE A SAFETY HAZARD THROUGH GRINDING OF RUTS IN PAVEMENT AND OBLITERATION OF LANE MARKINGS, A SERIOUS HAZARD IN WINTER DARKNESS.
