THE FOLLOWING PROBLEMS FOR PROSPECTIVE RESEARCH ARE OUTLINED: HEADLIGHTING, RIGHT-OF-WAY, OVERTAKING AND PASSING, MECHANICS OF STEERING, AND VEHICLE BRAKES. EXISTING INFORMATION IS REVIEWED. CONSIDERATION SHOULD BE GIVEN TO THE EFFECT OF HIGHWAY ILLUMINATION ON (1) SAFETY OF MAIN HIGHWAYS AFTER DARK, (2) THE DECREASE IN THE NUMBER OF ACCIDENTS TO PERSONS AND CARS, AND (3) THE ECONOMICS OF HIGHWAY TRAFFIC.
